The role

A Week in the Life of a Forward Deployed Engineer

Job descriptions make the Forward Deployed Engineer role sound abstract. Here is a realistic week instead: an FDE deploying an AI document-search solution for the claims team of a large insurance company. Every company is different, but the shape of the week is typical.

Monday: discovery and planning

  • A morning call with the claims team, watching how they search for policy documents today
  • A one-page problem brief: current process, pain points and a success metric, for example "reduce search time from 15 minutes to under 2"
  • Breaking the work into a plan for the week

Tuesday: data integration

  • Getting read access to the customer's document store: a SharePoint export and a cloud storage bucket
  • A Python script to pull 40,000 PDFs, extract text and handle the 3% that are scanned images (OCR)
  • Discovering 2,000 duplicate files, and flagging it to the customer

Wednesday: build

  • A RAG pipeline: chunk the documents, create embeddings, store them in a vector database
  • A simple web interface where claims agents ask questions and see answers with source links
  • Evaluation questions written with the customer's domain expert, to measure answer quality

Thursday: deploy

  • Packaging the app in Docker and deploying it into the customer's own cloud account
  • Configuring single sign-on so only claims staff can log in
  • Adding logging to see which queries fail

Friday: demo and feedback

  • A demo to the claims manager. The answers are good, but agents want the policy number highlighted
  • Shipping that change in an hour, live, during the call
  • A note to the core product team: "Three customers have now asked for highlighted entities in answers"

What the week shows

  • An FDE touches every layer: data, AI, backend, front-end, cloud and people.
  • Much of the job is unblocking: getting access, cleaning data, getting clarity.
  • Speed builds trust. Fixing something during a call does more than any slide.
  • The feedback loop to the product team is part of the job, not a side task.

Is this kind of week for you?

If that week sounds energising rather than exhausting, the role is likely a good fit. If you prefer deep focus on one codebase, compare it with core engineering in FDE vs software engineer. To start building the skills, follow the FDE roadmap.
