Interviews
Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Questions: The Loop and 20 Practice Questions
Forward Deployed Engineer interviews test more than coding. Companies want to see that you can code, think through messy problems and work with customers. Formats vary by company, but most loops include some version of the rounds below.
The typical FDE interview loop
| Round | What it tests | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter screen | Motivation, communication, basics | A clear story: why FDE, why this company |
| Coding | Practical coding, often data- or API-flavoured | Python, parsing, APIs, SQL |
| Decomposition / case | Turning a vague business problem into a technical plan | Practise clarifying, then structuring |
| System design | An end-to-end solution, often with AI | RAG, pipelines, deployment, trade-offs |
| Customer role-play | Handling an unclear or difficult "customer" | Discovery questions, expectation setting |
| Behavioral | Ownership, ambiguity, teamwork, failure | Prepared STAR stories |
| Take-home (sometimes) | Building something small end to end | Time-box it and write a great README |
What interviewers look for in every round
- Structured thinking: do you clarify, plan, then execute?
- Communication: do you think out loud and check understanding?
- Pragmatism: do you pick something that works now, and know how it would evolve?
- Ownership: do you take responsibility for the outcome?
- Customer empathy: do you think about the user, not just the technology?
Practice questions
Answer these out loud and time yourself. For design questions, always sketch the architecture.
Role and motivation
- Why do you want to be a Forward Deployed Engineer instead of a core software engineer?
- What do you think is the hardest part of the FDE role?
- How would you explain what an FDE does to a non-technical friend?
Coding and data
- Write a function that merges two CSV files on a customer ID and reports rows that didn't match.
- Parse a server log file and return the 10 most frequent error messages with counts.
- Write code to call a paginated API with retries and rate-limit handling.
- In SQL, find each customer's first and most recent order, and customers inactive for 90 days.
- How would you deduplicate customer records when names and emails are slightly different?
Applied AI
- Explain RAG to a customer's CTO in two minutes.
- Your RAG system gives wrong answers for 20% of questions. How do you debug it?
- When would you use an agent instead of a fixed workflow?
- How do you evaluate an LLM feature before launch?
- How would you cut the cost of an LLM application by half?
- What is prompt injection, and how do you defend against it?
System design
- Design a document Q&A system for a bank with 1 million documents and strict permissions.
- Design a pipeline that syncs data from Salesforce and a Postgres database every hour.
- How would you deploy an AI app inside a customer's cloud with no outbound internet access?
Customer scenarios
- A customer asks for a feature that would take 3 months, but you have 3 weeks. What do you do?
- The customer's IT team is slow to give you data access and the project is stalling. How do you handle it?
- During a demo, the system gives a wrong answer in front of an executive. What do you do?
How to answer customer scenario questions
These questions decide many FDE interviews. A strong answer usually follows the same shape: clarify what the customer actually needs and why, propose a smaller version you can deliver in time, make the trade-off explicit to the right stakeholder, and follow up in writing. For the "wrong answer in a demo" question, own it calmly, explain what happened, show the fix or the plan, and turn it into proof that you can be trusted under pressure.
Coding round tips
- Clarify inputs, outputs and edge cases before writing code
- Start with a simple working solution, then improve it
- Test with examples out loud
Run a full mock interview
Do one 90-minute session: one coding question, one decomposition prompt, one customer scenario and two behavioral questions. Record it and review how clearly you structured each answer. New to the role? Start with what a Forward Deployed Engineer is.
Frequently asked questions
What rounds are in a Forward Deployed Engineer interview?
Most loops include a recruiter screen, a practical coding round, a decomposition or case round, system design (often with AI), a customer role-play and behavioral questions. Some companies add a take-home project.
How do I prepare for an FDE interview?
Practise practical coding (Python, SQL, APIs), RAG and pipeline system design, and customer scenarios out loud. Prepare STAR stories about ownership and ambiguity, research the company's product and customers, and run a timed mock interview.
